Did ast or Prentice-Hall license the use of setuid from AT&T? It is patented, as most of you probably know. Or is Minix in technical violation of the patent? -- {dasys1,ncoast,well,sun,ihnp4}!hoptoad!gnu gnu@ingres.berkeley.edu Alt.all: the alternative radio of the Usenet. Contributions welcome - post 'em

>Did ast or Prentice-Hall license the use of setuid from AT&T? It is patented, >as most of you probably know. Or is Minix in technical violation of the >patent? Neither, I would think: AT&T formally renounced licensing and royalties on that patent some years ago. As quoted from <2366@hoptoad.uucp> by gnu@hoptoad.uucp (John Gilmore): +--------------- | Did ast or Prentice-Hall license the use of setuid from AT&T? It is patented, | as most of you probably know. Or is Minix in technical violation of the | patent? +--------------- The patent on setuid was dedicated to the public in 1978 (?), according to a posting of a few months back. As a result, anyone can use it. (I think this is similar to what AT&T did with getopt.) ++Brandon -- Brandon S. Contributions welcome - post 'em I don't know if AST & P-H licensed the setuid patent from AT&T (or D. Ritchie), but it is my understanding that AT&T has a pro bono publico policy on the use of that patent, and the gist of it is that you may use the setuid concept free of charge, provided you do not claim it as your own, and you do not prevent others from using it.
