The following "canned" message will be used when a person asks to subscribe directly to the "info-minix" mailing list. I am posting the message here since its contents are also relevant to USENET readers who would not otherwise see it. I will also repost this message from time to time, so that all readers can be kept up-to-date on its contents. If you have comments about this message, please reply directly to me, not to the newsgroup. Jim <info-minix-request@udel.edu> BBoards Support University of Delaware Subject: Re: please add me to the list: info-minix -------- Done. Please send contributions to the list proper to "info-minix@udel.edu" and administrivia to "info-minix-request@udel.edu". This mailing list is intended for the discussion of the Minix Operating System. This a Version 7 Unix clone written for IBM Compatible PCs by Andy Tanenbaum (minix@cs.vu.nl). He is also the author of a book which describes the system "Operating Systems: Design and Implementation", published by Prentice-Hall, 1987, ISBN 0-13-637406-9. This list is gatewayed to the BITNET list "MINIX-L@NDSUVM1" and its peers, which in turn is gatewayed to the USENET newsgroup "comp.os.minix". MINIX is currently at version 1.2. If you have version 1.1, you should retrieve the following diff files from the archive to upgrade. diff-1.2-1of4 diff-1.2-2of4 diff-1.2-3of4 diff-1.2-4of4 diff-1.2sh-1of2 diff-1.2sh-2of2 Other messages are archived in files named as follows: vol-VOL.NUMBER where "VOL" is the volume number of the digest and "NUMBER" is the number of that volume. The volume number changes when it is convenient for the list maintainer, not at specific intervals. They are available via anonymous ftp from "louie.udel.edu", "10.0.0.96", in the directory info-minix. I will also send them to you via mail at your request. In addition, monthly log files are available for BITNET subscribers from the LISTSERV at NDSUVM1. The file names are of the form LOGyymm where "yy" is the year and "mm is the numeric month. Several months of log files are kept on-line, the number depending on disk space availability. Finally, "interesting" messages, i.e. those containing primarily source code, are available via an archive retrieval service on "bugs.nosc.mil", "128.49.0.1", using both anonymous ftp and mail. Messages can be retrieved via anonymous ftp in the directory pub/Minix or by sending a mail request to "minix-server@bugs.nosc.mil" or "nosc!minix-server". The message should include, either among the header fields or the body, a line of the form: Reply-To: YOUR_MAIL_ADDRESS where YOUR_MAIL_ADDRESS is substituted with your mail address, as it would be known by "bugs.nosc.mil". The body of the message can contain one or more lines naming desired files, e.g.: send help send index send 1180@botter.cs.vu.nl Jim <info-minix-request@udel.edu> List Maintainer BBoards Support University of Delaware
