While we're on the topic of 3 1/2" drives :-) I was considering
replacing my second 5 1/4" drive with a 3 1/2" drive on my Leading Edge
model M. At the very least, it would seem that I will need to go to
DOS 3.2. Has anyone else successfully done this before? Does the 3
1/2" drive work with Minix? Does DOS 3.2 work with Minix?

DOS 3.2 or later is required unless you go with someone else's disk driver.
A 3.5 drive is no different from a 5.25 other than the size. Most 3.5 drives
are 720k, organized as 2 surfaces with 80 tracks each, just like a Teac 55F
or similar non-1.2meg 80trk drive.

The latest Minix floppy driver (with my 720k mods, now in the distributed
copy), will work fine on all 720k drives I've tried... including the Teac 55F
5.25 80trk, Sony 3.5's hung on an XT controller, and the 3.5's in laptops
such as the Toshiba 1100+, Toshiba 3100, and Zenith 181 (that's all I've
tried myself). You can also read/write 720k 5.25 floppies on an AT's 1.2meg
drive, apparently with no ill effects.

Huh?

From the poster on the pillar by my desk... "Eradicate DOS in your lifetime!"
