From: Glen Overby <ncoverby%NDSUVAX.BITNET@cunyvm.cuny.edu> One year ago today, on 12/22/86, Andy Tannenbaum posted his message entitled "UNIX Clone With Source Code Available" to USENET. I dont know if this is the "right" date to call "Minix's Birthday", but it clearly is a significant landmark. In one short year, Minix has grown from a promise into an environment for system hackers who can't afford a Unix source license, and for students where it simply isn't feasable to take the local vax down to work with. I think Minix will become even more popular after a good working serial port driver is in the hands of the many IBM PC bulletin board operators; Minix should provide them with an acceptable multi-user environment. While we have not yet seen them, there have been two ports to other processor architectures (National 32000 and Motorola 68000) as well as into protected mode on the 80286. Hopefully this next year will be as produtive as the last. Glen Overby Bitnet: ncoverby@ndsuvax UUCP: uunet!ndsuvax!ncoverby
