[comp.os.minix] Televideo AT/Tecmar help

corley@cs.rochester.edu (David Corley) (04/16/88)

[ I am sending this from a friend's account on another machine. Please
reply to me (addresses below) via e-mail, since our news system is in
  flux right now. ]

I know that everyone out there is amazingly sick of hearing "Minix doesn't
work on such-and-such-a-hard-disk and all, but I've got one of those.

I've got Minix 1.2 up and running nicely on my 8MHz Televideo AT. But it
refuses to acknowledge my hard disk.

The controller, I believe, is Televideo's own (It has their name stamped
on it, with their own assembly number). But one of the chips says WDC '83
on it (also WD1010PL-05 and 8417 05) so maybe it's a Western Digital.

The drive I've got on it now is a CMI 30 Meg, but does that really matter?
This summer I expect to get another drive for Minix exclusively.

Can anyone help out? I'm not a real hardware person, although if I put in
the effort I imagine I may be able to figure this one out with my trusty
Televideo technical manual. But if anyone has any pointers PLEASE let me
know ... I'm anxious to get it running off the hard disk so that I can start
doing some real development of the system.

The other problem I've got is with the video. I've got a Tecmar color card,
and it seems to be exhibiting the same behavior as is described for EGA ...
That is, every once in a while (fixed number of lines or bytes apart, maybe?)
it'll start putting garbage up instead of the text, in full lines. Then,
when the top line of garbage gets scrolled to the top of the screen, it all
magically turns into what it was supposed to look like in the first place.
Some sort of display mapping incompatibility between my card and CGA? Help?

Thanks for any input. Please e-mail any replies (addresses below) because
something seems to be wrong with our news feed.
