[comp.os.minix] Bit mapped CRT graphics on Minix

Leisner.Henr@xerox.com (Marty) (04/22/88)

Anyone with any ideas or current implementations for implementing raster/vector
CRT operators on Minix systems using color/ega/hercules boards?

On the same thought, anyone know what it would take to bring up the X window
system on Minix? Or how about a subset of it (mini-X windows?)?

Marty, the 64K object size limit woud force a massive rewrite of a massive
monolithic system - also even if you wait for Atari MINIX, I'm not sure the
cpu has the horsepower - wait for 386 MINIX: X14 will be a fairly easy port
to it, I'll wager...

Actually, the 8-MHz Atari STs are within a factor of 2 of the speed of the
Compaq 16 MHz 386s when you bypass the overhead of GEM and TOS (or leave
GEM and TOS in and compare with Windows/386 -- same ratio). So you are
unlikely to be happy with one and consider the other unacceptable. On the
other hand, 386 Minix is likely to be a rewrite on a comparable scale to
the conversion to the 68000 if it is to be really effective. Quite a wait,
I'll wager.
