A while back someone said AST gave them 1.1->1.3 diffs. I tried to follow the instructions, but I'm not on bitnet and could not get hold of them. Does one of the archive sites have these? If not can someone send them? I've had real trouble going from 1.1->1.2, and so finally gave up, but will try again. Most of the problems I encountered were mostly from the compiler. I did get the separate I&D asld, but was there a new "cem" or "cpp"? Someone asked this on the net, but I don't recall seeing a reply (many times I see good questions, but no replys. haynes@llnl-lcc.gov

What he's got is diffs for the commands and the library routines. I'm presuming that one can build a complete 1.3 distribution by adding all the non-diff 1.3 stuff that has been posted by Andy over the last month or so. I'm not on bitnet either, but I had no trouble retrieving the diffs from Glen's listserv (whatever that is!). Since I have arpanet access, I just mailed to listserv%ndsuvm1.bitnet@cunyvm.cuny.edu a message containing a line of the form GET MINIX UP1-C1 MINIX This particular command retrieves the first half of the command diffs. Note that I used upper case only. I figured it would be too much to ask for an IBM machine to understand lower case. :-) I got a response to my first request overnight, and then the other three requests produced results within hours. Since three of the files contain lines longer than 80 bytes (...and IBM created the CARD, and it was 80 bytes, and IBM saw that it was GOOD...), the listserv encodes them before mailing them. It tells you what file you need to retrieve to get a program to un-encode them. When I unshared the files, I got some messages about file lengths not matching. I haven't had time to investigate further, but suspect that some mailer stripped trailing blanks on me. >I've had real trouble going from 1.1->1.2, and so finally gave up, but will >try again. It is incompatible with the rest of the 1.1 compiler and should be deleted. >haynes@llnl-lcc.gov Paul -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Paul L. I am not sure if there will be a change between 1.3 and 1.2. Not much has changed. I may not bother to include the new compiler since nothing major is different. Sometimes I answer queries by mail rather by posting it, especially when I think the potential audience for the answer is limited. Sometimes I don't answer at all, especially when I figure someone else is likely to (e.g., has anyone ported MINIX to the XYZ clone). Andy Tanenbaum (ast@cs.vu.nl) -- Andy Tanenbaum (ast@cs.vu.nl)

Perhaps the archive site administrators could post >something about how to get them. I guess I qualify as an 'archive site administrator' because I keep up the one on NDSUVM1.BITNET. Below is another copy of the article I posted on May 30, 1988 describing how to obtain these diffs from listserv@ndsuvm1.bitnet. Please hold on to it this time! One additional note I'd like to make: the last I heard, this listserv restricted requests to 256KB per day. I requested that it be raised but have not heard if it has been. If it hasn't, you'll just have to spread your requests out over several days. This applys to EVERYTHING on the listserv. ========================================================================= *Date: Mon, 30 May 88 00:58:10 CDT *Reply-To: INFO-MINIX@UDEL.EDU *Sender: Minix operating system <MINIX-L@NDSUVM1> *From: Glen Overby <NCOVERBY@NDSUVAX> *Subject: Minix 1.3 upgrade files available on Bitnet I have made all of the first set of 1.3 upgrade files available to users on Bitnet in a form which is probably "cleaner" than that they will recieve thru their (brain-dammaged 80 column punched-card) mailers. All 10 parts are NOW available from LISTSERV@NDSUVM1 under the MINIX files section with the names 'MINIX UP3-Axx' where xx is 1 thru 10. The "A" stands for the first distribution of 1.3 upgrades (there were 2 sets of "1.2" upgrade files, and it wasa never clear to me exactly which of them were "it", so I used both of them). A "package" named "MINUP3 PACKAGE" should be available Real Soon Now (as soon as I creat and PUT it) to aid those of you who wish to retrieve all of the files in one GET. For information about using this file server, send a file (mail or raw bitnet) to LISTSERV@NDSUVM1 with the one-line text "GET MINIX ANNOUNCE MINIX" and it will send you the Minix Information Sheet. More assistance is available from LISTSERV itself with the "HELP" command. ***Please DO NOT send these requests to MINIX-L@NDSUVM1*** that will have the embarassing effect of showing the entire Minix world that you can't follow directions. My appology for not being as slow getting this out as I usually am :-) Glen Overby <nu070156@ndsuvm1> -- Glen Overby Bitnet: ncoverby@ndsuvax UUCP: uunet!ndsuvax!ncoverby
