A few months ago I posted a request for help to determine why I was unable to get my copy of Minix V1.1 to boot on my Leading Edge Model D2. Well, I think I have solved the problem. It appears that the problem was the video adapter. Previously, I would get to the point where I was asked to type '=' to boot minix. When I pressed '=' the system would hang and I would have to press reset. The LE D2 comes with a multi-mode EGA compatible video adapter. It is capable of emulating CGA, IBM MDA, Hercules, Paradise, and EGA. A program is provided, EGA.COM, to select various modes, enable an automatic mode selection feature, and lock into a specific mode. There is also a provision for handling certain types of games which require a specific non-EGA mode but which also confuse the mode-selection logic. This feature of EGA.COM locks the specified mode and performs a re-boot. So, here is exactly what I did: 1) Boot MSDOS (V3.2) 2) Run EGA Select MDA mode (I have a monochrome monitor) Lock mode (don't exit the program, yet) 3) Insert Minix Boot disk in drive A: Select reboot and press return 4) Minix boots and prints menu Insert Minix root disk in drive A: type '=' to continue boot 5) Boot process continues and eventually you get a "login:" prompt I was then able to log in as "ast" and poke around. My appologies if this seems a bit primitive to you. I am somewhat chagrined that I didn't think of doing this earlier. I will now proceed with trying to catch up to the rest of you who have had minix running for a long time.
