A new-product announcement in a recent EDN, for a fairly standard ASCII terminal from Teletype, started out "A general-purpose interactive terminal compatible with Bell Labs's UNIX and other ASCII-oriented operating systems....". How long will it be before they don't feel it's worth saying "and other..."?

Pardon me, but what is "an ASCII-oriented operating system"? Does UNIX somehow rely on ASCII? Does the terminal not work on, say, MVS with ASCII conversion. I think it already wasnt worth saying, since it just demonstrated that they didnt understand the concepts behind the words. Michael Wagner, University of Toronto Computing Services
