If anyone is still having trouble with this combination of controller and disk, I just discovered another variable you can tweak. A current article in comp.sys.ibm.pc, entitled "More on Spinwrite", mentions that there is a jumper on the WD-27X to switch between looking like MFM or RLL. I take this to mean that the jumper causes the presentation to the computer to appear as either 17 sectors per track, or 26 sectors per track.
