[comp.os.minix] Minix 1.3b on my NEC V30 system

clark@ttidca.TTI.COM (Ralph Clark) (09/10/88)

In response to the NEC V30 inquiry, mine runs OK. I've got a Victor Champion,
4.77Mh NEC V30 (like an 8086), 16-bit memory, 8-bit bus, Hercules graphics,
and ST-238 30-meg disk with WD_27X controller. Please add to the "runs on"
list.

Here are a few notes about my experience with MINIX 1.3b. I think I'm
running most of it as distributed, built up from my original 1.1 Prentice-
Hall disks plus 1.2 compiler from UniPress. I've made my posted changes to
xt_wini.c. I'm running Charles Hedrick's new tty.c (because I wanted the
expanded ANSI control sequences support). I'm running someone else's mount
and umount and df posted as 1.2 mods, because I like the df display better,
especially the default of all disks if no device is specified.

I've been happy with the 1.2 printer.c with my Epson FX-80+ printer, but I
haven't run it very hard - mostly docs and manuals.

The help program recently posted by someone is really great for MINIX man
pages. (I wish I had the original 1.1 set online - I thought I read once
that they were in some directory in the distribution, but I never found them
in my 640K XT set.)

The new tty driver seems to be able to connect well on my system (with a
Supra 2400-baud modem running at 1200). I can use term to talk to a VAX
(although it's a bit jerky for reading news). The posted Kermit doesn't
work as well for a terminal program (ls -l on the vax produces half a screen
of file data and half a page of Greek characters!), and I can't seem to get
a file transfer dialogue going - the vax acts like it doesn't see the
response. Locally, it was somehow less of a thrill than I had expected when
I finally got a login: prompt on my PC Jr with Procomm connected via a null
modem cable, but it worked just like the console.

Note that I said "connect" well. It works once, to the vax or the pcjr, and
then tty1 seems to get lost (yes, I do boot with /etc/ttys either 0c1 or 1c1).
When I run stty</dev/tty1 after booting, I see speed=1200. After one exercise
I see speed=unknown (other parameters are displayed as the original defaults)
and I can't run any command with tty1 again. stty won't change the speed,
either. I note that commands/stty.c has been updated since 1.2 with at least
3 cdiff's - maybe it would help if the definitive 1.3b stty.c could be posted.
