From: parker at NRL-CSS (Alan Parker) Date: 17 May 1982 19:58:03-EST We have a 4.1bsd system running on a new 780 with 2Mbytes, 4 dz-11s, rm05 disk, and a Benson/Varian plotter. About twice a day it hangs; doesn't panic, prints nothing on console. If you have a shell prompt and just hit return you get a new prompt. If you type anything else its gone. TTY lines echo and do the low level editing (i.e. the line kill character causes a newline). The system is configured for 30 users. We run the rand ncp fe. We are new to Vaxes and 4.x. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Oh, DEC diags run OK, of course. Geoff, where does the fencp mailing list live?

Date: Tuesday, 18 May 1982 13:19-PDT Sounds like there may be something wrong with disk activity. Try typing "dirs" or "set" or some such built-in command to the shell, to see if it works ok when there is no disk activity required. You may have a flaky attention summary bit or be missing interrupts or something. If necessary you can put a watchdog timer in the disk driver to poke the controller if an interrupt hasn't happened after a certain length of time. System III does this. The "info-fencp" mailing list is here at Rand-UNIX...do you want to be added?
