At the summer 1977 users' group meeting in Champaign-Urbana, I stayed with
Steve Holmgren (as did Ken).  One night, we were bs'ing about absurd things
and I asked Ken about the "amusing etymology".  His reply was

     .. ... Jesus!  The worst user interface ever concieved!
     It stood for "Delete from SWitches".  

The memory was apparently a painful one for him, and he did not explain
to me exactly what the user interface was - but I believe that the "SWitches"
refers to the pdp/11 switch register.  The rest is left as an exercise to
the reader.
