[comp.os.minix] words and nonwords

While I make no claims about my lexicographic prowess, I did a bit of homework
as a result of Vincent Broman's recent posting of bugs in my spelling list.
I grabbed my copy of Webster's New World Dictionary (Deluxe Color Edition)
and salvaged the following.  The rest have been deleted.

anomic: adj, characterized by lack of purpose, identity or ethical values
ave: 1. interj. hail!  2. interj. farewell!  3. n. the salutation ave  4.Avenue
backbend: n. an acrobatic stunt in which the body is bent backward
beechen: adj. pertaining to the beech tree
birchen: adj. pertaining to the birch tree
delim: not a real word, but EQN users won't like deleting this one
dept: abbreviation for department
destuff: not a real word yet, but if HDLC catches on, who knows
destuffing: see above
destuffs: see above
effector: n. a muscle, gland etc. capable of responding to a stimulus
effectors: see above
effector's: see above
exhaustable: should be exhaustible (have to move it in the list)
gsize: see delim
hldc: see destuff
headend: not a real word, but common when writing about broadband LANs
headends: see above
lapb: deleting this would disappoint all the PTT fans in the world, in any
nanosec: 1/1000 of a microsec
pcm: pulse code modulation (datacomm folks use this a lot)
powerset: not in the dictionary, but I think it is a valid mathematical term
powerset's: see above
powersets: see above
pragmat: computer jargon, but pretty common among compiler designers
prog: v. to prowl about, as in search of food (for the British: add progging)
protestor: Webster's says its ok; I won't protest
protestor's: see above
protestors: n. people who went to college in the 1960s
purchaseable: should be purchasable
sdlc: if we're gonna keep hldc and lapb, we gotta keep this too
