This comes as a request from a total novice at MINIX, so it has probably been dealt with before. I'll appreciate any help. I have brought MINIX 1.1 up on an XT clone which has a 20 meg Seagate ST225 hard disk drive. I reformatted the drive with a 150-cylinder (0-149) partition, then marked the partition as non-DOS with diskfix. I then prepared the rest of the cylinders as a new DOS partition, and set up my DOS software on it. After booting MINIX, I attempted to make a file system using the following command: mkfs /dev/hd1 5099 This failed. The documentation for 1.1, including the READ_ME file in /usr/doc is pretty explicit that the driver if for the IBM hard disk drive only, so I presume that is why <mkfs> failed with the Seagate. Is there in fact a driver or a patch that will allow me to use the Seagate drive? Again, any help will be appreciated. Ted A. Campbell ...ecsgate!dukeac!numen!tcamp ...ecsgate!dukeac!tcamp

In article <1087@dukeac.UUCP> tcamp@dukeac.UUCP (Ted A. Campbell) describes an attempt to get Minix 1.1 talking to his ST225 hard disk: > ... >This failed. The disk controller has more to do with whether Minix will work than the drive itself. What controller do you have? Chances are good that it's a Western Digital controller (these are very popular). The XT hard disk driver for Minix 1.2 is much more diplomatic; it will work on more controllers than the 1.1 driver, including the popular WD controllers. And it will plug into the 1.1 kernel as a direct replacement. You can get this driver (xt_wini.c) from the archives. - Jaime ---------------------------------------------------------------------- uucp: uunet!mimsy!jds James da Silva domain: jds@mimsy.umd.edu
