[comp.os.minix] from 1.1 to 1.3

sbmueller@trillium.waterloo.edu (Stephler();) (11/02/88)

Oh no, not another request from a neophyte...

Long time ago, say over a year ago or so, I purchased
Minix 1.1 (gasp! how obsolete!) from my local software store.
I haven't actually used it between then and now, owing to the
fact it doesn't run on my Model 50.

I am aware that the current state of things is 1.3c or so.

Question:
Where do I get/how do I go about getting my 1.1 version
up to snuff?

Can I buy an upgrade to 1.3 for less than buying 1.3 `new'?
(ie. is my 1.1 worth anything?) Or do I just have to run
oodles of patches? If so, where to get said patches?

I'd like to then run it on the Model 50. From what I've read in
this newsgroup it appears that it hasn't been done yet, but may work.

I will have access to machines other than the Model 50 for the
actual work of upgrading.

Many thanx for any and all help in bringing me out of the stone age :-)

The summary pretty much covers it.

Sharing the labor, combining expertise, the ability to check behaviour
before and after specific changes easily by having several machines
available, multiple sources of the upgrade amterials are all pretty
obvious advantages.

As for organizing such, try LOCAL distribution net postings, established
user groups that may have interested members, BBS's, etc.

I recently tested 1.3c on the Model 50; it appears that the hard disk driver
is incompatible. Dr. Tanenbaum is working on it and will hopefully be
sending me the new version to test shortly. (Unless you'd prefer to do
it...? The Model 50's I'm using are those of a client and I don't have
particularly consistent access to them.)
