[comp.os.minix] rs232 console

mattioli@took.dec.com (JOHN R. MATTIOLI, JR. DTN: 226-7752) (11/11/88)

I've been having a rather serious problem with minix since last March
when I bought it and I'm wondering if somebody out there can help me.

I badly need to have a console device modified so that I can use one of
the com ports as the standard console. I've been told there are several patches
that will do this, but I can't communicate with minix via the standard keyboard
and screen so I can't apply these patches.

I should have asked if minix supported rs232 before I bought it but I
figured that it was unix and a major piece of unix was the tty drivers so they
wouldn't dare leave it out. Now I've got all these upgrades for v1.2 to v1.3
and I'd really like to get current but, before I can get current I need a tty
device driver that I can communicate with.

If anybody has a functioning minix that will allow the com port to be
used as a console (or if anybody would be willing to help me build such a
system) I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. I'd really like to get
minix up and running but I'm starting to get very discouraged.

I'm not looking to forego my duty as a hacker, I just want to give
myself a fighting chance. I do own both minix and the associated book and I'm
now making one last request before I declare this stuff "shelfware."
