I received my MINIX disks a few days after my birthday, whata great present!
[Thanks Matt!]
Here are my experiences with MINIX, so far:
- I have an XT clone, "American" brand, with a UNITRON motherboard.
1 360k disk, 640k, UNITRON 1.0 BIOS, a Multi I/O card with: Parallel
Serial Game Mono-Hercules Battery-backed-clock/calendar, 84 key KBD,
8088 4.77/8 Mhz, (2) 10Mb Seagate ST213 (ST216? I can't remember which) with
HD controller (I don't recall the maker of the HD controller).
Minix boots and runs fine with this system. [Except the hard disk]
- When I did the "dd if=/dev/hd5 of=/dev/null count=1000" MINIX read succeeded
in copying 34 sectors and then stopped. This disk has 2 heads with 17
sectors per track. I suspect that I just need to change some magic HEAD
define in xt_wini.c - I plan to do that SOON. [Any input is appreciated]
- At work, I tried booting MINIX on an AT. The first attempt to boot just
makes the floppy spin. After pressing the reset button, MINIX boots and runs.
- Also at work, using an XT clone, the results where the same as with the
AT: Sit-and-spin the first time, boot OK the second time.
Both work computers have 640k and a "standard" configuration.
- [At home] my MSDOS 3.2 diskcopy would not copy the MINIX distribution disks.
It would say "Incompatible or bad source disk" and exit. I finally booted an
old copy of PCDOS and tried its diskcopy - PCDOS's diskcopy worked.
I plan to run MINIX on partition #2 of my second hard disk. I.e., /dev/hd7,
which will be a 5Mb partition, I need my other 15Mb for MSDOS stuff. :-(
