(Note that I have not yet bought Minix or Mr. Tanenbaum's book on Operating Systems.) Let's say that I've just recieved my brand-spanking new copy of Minix from P-H. I'd like to set it up on my Zenith Z-148, using a 5MB partition (2nd partition on a 20MB physical disk). I have 640K of memory, but would like to avoid using a ramdisk if at all possible. What patches would you Minix gurus suggest I get and install? How do you set it up? Assuming that I have a fairly good Unix (System III and Xenix/286 System V) background, is there anything significantly different that I will notice? Does Minix (ordered from P-H) come with any manuals? Can I just buy a manual for Minix, without getting the related OS Design and Implimentation stuff? I'm interested in playing around with Minix, not writing an operating system. I've heard two Minix books mentioned: One, entitled "Design and Implimentation of Operating Systems" (or something like that) that is real long (and costs $50 at my local bookstore), and another, shorter book (that I haven't been able to find any info on). What's the difference? I've heard, from different sources, that it's okay to copy Minix (at least the ST version) for a couple of friends, but if copying gets out of hand, they will disallow people from doing it. Does anybody know anything about this? Is it also true for the IBM version? If my friend got a copy of Minix/IBM, is it okay to get a copy from him, as to avoid shelling out $80 (that I can't really afford)? -- "Don't find a fault. | Marc Unangst Find a remedy." | UUCP: mju@m-net.ann-arbor.mi.us -Henry Ford | UUCP path: ...!uunet!umix!m-net!mju ---------------------+ Internet: mju%m-net@umix.cc.umich.edu
