We Tried to get this to Mr Tannenbaum directly, but the net is

ignorance on the subject, but we are really stuck!

Mr. Tannenbaum,

We are having trouble with your MINIX operating system. The problem
is this: We have an Epson II+ AT compatible machine, 40 meg HD. and
2 3.5" 1.44 meg floppy drives.

We tried to copy MINIX from the original 5.25" drives onto 3.5" on a
machine owned by the school (St. Olaf College). However, we had
little success because the new made 3.5" boot disk refuses to mount the
3.5" drives and therefore will not mount /root and /usr. The drive
does not even spin. As I see it, there could be two things wrong.

1. we are doing something incorrect in our copy procedure.
2. The device drivers included get confused when they don't have a
   5.25" drive to boot on.

To copy the disks, we booted MINIX and used the command

	cp /dev/fd0 /dev/fd1

eight times to copy all the master diskettes. As I said, the boot
disk boots to the main menu, but when we press '=', the machine locks
(even ctr-alt-del is disabled!)

Please send us information on how to remedy this situation.

						thanks,
						Mark Henning
