[comp.os.minix] Q: 1:1 controllers, VGA displays

paula@bcsaic.UUCP (Paul Allen) (02/02/89)

I'm plugging away on my upgrade from 1.1 to 1.3. I now appear to have
a good libc.a, thanks to all who sent mail, and especially thanks to
Vince for making the 1.2 compiler-specific stuff available on
bugs.nosc.mil. I've succeeded in making all of the commands and am
beginning on the kernel. I'm having some trouble with missing .h files,
but need to investigate further. I may post more about this later.

I've got a couple questions for the net. I'm very close to purchasing
a 386-based clone and am considering getting a fast 1:1 controller and/or
a VGA. Is anybody using the stock 1.3 at_wini.c with anything other
that a WD1003? Is anybody using the bios_wini.c that Andy posted last
year? A scan through the latest compatibility list showed WD 1002 and
1003 controllers working, but trouble with the 27-X under 1.2. (I think
the one I want is the 1006, but that's from memory.) Anybody have any
experience with Western Digital 1:1 controllers? I understand Omti
makes a 1:1 controller. Anyone using that one?

I would love to have a VGA display on my new machine, but I also would
like to be able to boot 1.3 Minix and have it understand the display.
I've been looking through magazine articles, but it isn't clear whether
the new VGA cards emulate older display adapters via the BIOS or at
the register level. Is anybody running Minix with a VGA? Which one?

If you've got information for me, please send mail. I'll summarize to
the net.

Thanks,

Paul
