[comp.os.minix] 1:1 controllers, VGA displays

paula@bcsaic.UUCP (Paul Allen) (02/08/89)

About a week ago, I asked if anyone had Minix running on a 1:1
interleave controller or a VGA display. I've had four responses,
and since they're all drifting in the same direction, I guess
it's time for a summary.

Eric Schneider (eric@wsu.edu) runs Minix on an IBM AT with an
HP 16-bit VGA card, which he says is actually a Paradise VGA
Plus-16. He has no problems and suggests that most non-IBM
VGA's provide hardware emulation of previous adapters and
so should work with Minix.

Mac Michaels (mac@mcc.com) runs Minix 1.3 on a Gateway 2000
20Mhz 386 with a DTC 7280 1:1 controller and an Everex EVGA
card. He says that Minix runs fine in EGA mode, since the
Everex card switches modes depending on how you try to use it.

Charles Marslett (chasm@killer.dallas.tx.us) has used several
EGA and VGA cards with 1.3 on both a Heath/Zenith 151 and an
AST Premium/286. He didn't think a VGA would cause me any
problems.

Phil Miller (...!tektronix!ogccse) just acquired a Paradise VGA+
card. Minix boots and simple things work, but he hasn't tried
any screen manupulating programs like mined, elle, or stevie. Phil
noted that register-compatible VGA's like his Paradise tend to
show incompatibilities under DOS when running FANSI with some
graphics programs or ANSI with KERMIT. A recent issue of one of
the PC mags (he wasn't sure which) gave code for working around
these problems.

Thanks for the information, guys! Now is there anybody out
there running Minix on a WD1006, Adaptec, or Ommti 1:1 controller?
Send mail, and I'll summarize.
