Date: 9 Jun 82 9:57:35-EDT (Wed) Hello World, My name is Glen Swiggart and I work in Software Support at the Federal Communications Commission at the FCC. We currently do all the data entry work for license applications at Gettysburg Pa on an Entrex key-to-disk system. We are currently investigating replacing this system with a minicomputer that we can program to not merely do the off-line data entry for licensing, but all the processing. We are also looking at inter-communication issues associated other mini's and micro's being installed at the Commission. To aid in network compatibility we would like very much to install UNIX as the operating system on the Gettysburg mini. The purpose of my inquiry is to inquire whether there are others who are using UNIX as operating system in this type of production environment. Particularly whether Data Entry software exists for use under UNIX. My definition of Data Entry software is software giving a full screen menu prompt for data to be entered, software that gives immediate error indication when invalid (i.e. alphabetic vs. numeric for example) data is entered, and software engineered to not give widely variable response time which would throw off the rhythm of data entry personnel. The minicomputer would be have approximately 20 to 30 users. The advice of anyone knowing of someone doing this type work with Unix as a base or having insights as to its applicability would be appreciated. Thanks, Glen Swiggart (202) 632-7816
