[comp.os.minix] Splitting into several discussion groups

jnall%FSU.BITNET@cunyvm.cuny.edu (John Nall 904-644-5241) (03/01/89)

As much as I hate to be in the minority (actually, I don't), judging by
the other responses to this issue, I would say keep it with one discussion
group. I read a number of other discussion-group messages, and Minix is
above average as far as content. I like to read about the ST problems,
even if I use an AT, and an occasional long ST binary/or/source is quickly
disposed of with a press of the N key.

Not only that, ast is accepted (by me, at least) as the guru for this
group, even if I occasionally disagree with him, and he advocates one
group.

In order to alleviate the impression that it is the opinion of a minority
I want to add a posting to this discussion.

I'm all for keeping minix in ONE SINGLE group. It makes finding useful
information abount minix a lot easier than scanning several newsgroups.
And besides: If certain articles don't interest you: there is a newsreader
called nn that lets you choose the articles you wish to read in a newsgroup
from a menu. By making it clear in the subject-line, whether an article
is ST-specific or PC-specific (write ST or PC somewhere in the subject
line) or whether its of general interest (neither ST nor PC appear in the
subject line) the problem of having to scan through too many articles can
be reduced to (almost) none. Besides, I'm going to continue reading every-
thing that sounds interesting, be it ST- or PC-specific or general info.

However, DON'T POST BINARIES IF YOU HAVE SOURCE. Everybody running Minix
has a C-Compiler. It's a lot more fun to find a utility written for the
PC and be able to adapt it to ST-Minix than to look at a binary for the
PC and swearing, because it sounds interesting but you can't do anything
with it.

Enough said. Have a nice weekend.

Martin

If it's a choice between one group, and 5 groups, I'd rather have
one group. I've seen enough junk float by here to know that the
folks in PC/ST land won't think to cross-post their changes. (Of
course, those changes are probably worthless anyway, if they're so
un-professional as think in such machine dependant terms.)

So, my vote is to keep things as they are. (Good Conservative Policy,
eh?)

Because of the nature of my newsfeed, I would like to see a split
between general discussion and source/diff/binary postings, but
that could become inconvient too.

I would also like to ask folks to put a curb on the binary postings.
(uuencoding squeezed tar files is fine, tho.) Making the binaries
available for FTP or BITNET file transfer is fine, and those folks
on the end of primitive networks can always ask for a kindly soul
to send a binary through e-mail.

Anyway, the bandwidth I want to conserve is human bandwidth. I don't
give a damm about machine bandwidth, but if there's more postings
(and fixes to postings and fixes to fixes to postings, aiiieee!)
then *SOMETHINGS* *WRONG*.
