allbery@ncoast.ORG (Brandon S. Allbery) (03/05/89)
I just grabbed the 1.1-1.2 diffs from bugs.nosc.mil in an attempt to get my Minix up to the current level. I haven't yet looked at the tar file to see if there's a readme in it, as I prefer to minimize the size of files (i.e. keep them tar'ed and/or compressed) on the intermediate system (uunet) where I can FTP from; so be gentle with me if it's described there. Anyway, I'm running 1.1 with a few minor hacks (mainly, I added /etc/mnttab to mount, umount, and df so I didn't have to try to remember what was mounted and so I wouldn't have to type as much to see all of disk space on up to 4 devices (/dev/ram, /dev/hd2, /dev/hd3, /dev/fd0); and the 1.2 mpx88.s and xt_wini.c so my hard drive would work). I do *not* have most of the stuff that went by comp.os.minix before the 1.2 update -- my original setup is long gone, I built the current one solely from my 1.1 disks and the above- mentioned patches. (Oh -- one other hack: my ramdrive is only 80K, with most of the stuff not necessary to boot now in /usr/bin or /usr/lib. I can build a minix with a larger ramdisk, but won't unless minix 1.2 somehow installs itself onto the currently-running system. I'll know when I see it.) The $64,000 question: is this sufficient? Should I start with an unpatched 1.1? Do I need to grab some of the 1.1 enhancements from bugs.nosc.mil? The readme file outside the tarchive was not particularly helpful with this question; I hope that a better readme is inside the tarchive, but I'm asking here just in case. While I'm thinking about it: I will upgrade to 1.3 as soon as I've got 1.2 running stably. Will this install on top of the bugs.nosc.mil 1.2 update, or will I need more for that, too? And one more question: the binary "afio" recently posted can't open the console *or* /dev/tty (I tried linking /dev/console to /dev/tty to see if it was a bug in /dev/tty). I didn't notice any bugs off-hand in the tty code of 1.1, although that is such a mess that I couldn't really hope to. *Is* there a bug? If so, is it fixed in 1.2? 1.3? It'd be real nice if I could do a backup of my Minix partition instead of losing it like I did my original Minix partition.... Thanks in advance, ++Brandon -- Brandon S.
