[comp.os.minix] ICD or BMS host

hvo@mit-amt (Hai Vo) (04/19/89)

I am planning to build a hard drive with one of the above host adaptor card.
Are there any problems with either the ICD or the BMS-200 that I should be
aware of ? I think I am going with the ST277N, has any one has experience with
the setup or the drive. Also what software are available for formatting and
partitionning the drive, does it work well under Minix ? Generally, I'm looking
for any advise, warning concerning the setup above running under Minix.
Please reply through net mail and thanks in advance.

I have a BMS200 which I am using with the the original ADAPTEC
controller distributed by BMS controlling 2 drives of different sizes
and speeds. I put it all together in an XT style case with a 150
Watt power supply. It all came together quiet easily and works
marvellously well both under TOS and MINIX. (60 MB total is almost
enough.) I haven't tried the ``supra speed tests'' yet since backing
up all that without a tape is a real pain and takes a lot of disks.
(I do have backups but they are of the incremental sort so if disaster
strikes, it will take me some time to recover - word to the wise.) I
have no experience with other approaches so I can't tell you how this
approach compares with them.

I would have mailed this to you directly but our notes program did not
leave enough of an address to do so.
