[comp.os.minix] Request help with rookie-type questions

vince@bcsaic.UUCP (Vince Skahan) (04/27/89)

please allow me to ask a few really rookie questions regarding
how to get minix up and running on my PC clone (Tandy 1000 SX)

first: a kind soul posted the diffs to make my system run under 1.2
(thanks). If I can't get it running without those diffs and I can't
boot it up (since the default configuration is standard and does not
includethe diffs), don't I have a catch-22 here ??? How can I get the
system to a state where I CAN apply the diffs and rebuild for my system ???

second: there IS a 640K IBM-PC that I can get to which is pretty stock
and should run the vanilla version. It has one 360KB floppy and a 20MB
hard disk. Is it possible to go through the steps on a 1-floppy system
at all ??? What's a condensed list of how to go about it??? Specifically,
I want to use the one system I CAN get to to build a good version with
the diffs I need for home...

third: I think this was addressed way back when but I wasn't reading this
group then... "how do I run with a 720KB 3.5 inch floppy as well as the
360"??? My particular system at home has a 360 as a: and a 720 as b: (as well
as a hard disk). Do I want to switch the locations of the drives and make
the 720 a: and 360 b: or does it not matter?

fourth: There has been lots of discussion about compiling under Turbo-C
for development. I have TurboC 2.0 and lots of room on my hard disk.
HOw do I get the sources from the minix-formatted disk onto my hard disk...
How do I get the compiled binaries back onto floppies to run
off of (I'll be happy to RTFM if you can tell me where in TFM that info
is :-) ). I'd much rather live for now in the MSDOS world until I get
my feet wet and get the system running.

Fifth: I hear there is a /doc directory with info regarding setting up a
hard disk system. Does it remind me how to partition my existing disk into
msdos and minix areas ???

Next: how do you handle the case of a 1-floppy system (386) with a 1.2
MB floppy in drive a: and no other floppies...we have a similar problem
with this system (a friend's) as with mine...you cn't apply the
diffs if you cn't get it to boot...

Any help would be greatly appreciated. We have a few folks here who
are greatly interested in minix but we'e kind of stuck until
we can get the basic system up and running and figure out how to
do the basica things that are needed to enhance it.

Please feel free to e-mail to me (see address below) OR post followups
since our e-mail sometimes bounces (sorry...it's not under my control).
I'll be happy to summarize any good stuff I receive by e-mail.
