[comp.os.minix] Minix 1.3 Works!!!!!

benton@VAX1.CC.UAKRON.EDU (Kevin Benton) (04/25/89)

I previously had a problem installing Minix 1.2 on an Everex Step 386/20.
Finally, I gave up, having been sent the wrong version in the first place. When
1.3 came in the mail, I put its lovely little boot disk in the floppy, hit the
good ole' 3 key, and lo and be hold, I got "Minix 1.3 ..."

The Everex Step 386/20 runs at 20 MHz, has a WDC controller, with an 80 Meg
hard disk. The second partition is an "Extended Partition" with no logical
drives mounted inside it. The partition runs from cyl 218 to 417, and has
the /usr on it. I still load the rfs from floppy, and truly love the speed.
The video is a Multisync II monitor on a Paradise EGA/VGA color card. The
floppy disks are standard (2) 1.2 meg. Memory is 640K base + 1Mb extended
which gives me a 1200 sector ram disk in extended, and all the 640K for
exe's.

To say the least, this thing kicks! I do wish, however, that I could get
a version of MINIX that would use swap. I also wish that the 1.3 had gettys
for runningterminals. This would make configuration somewhat easier, and
also easier to tell from a ps, what's going on...

I am having slight problems getting my /etc/ttys to work properly. Under DOS
I have the modem on com1, and it's maxbaud is 2400. I tried the following
in my ttys, and got multiple logins on the console until I did the std. ctrl-f9.
Here are the contents...

100
1d1

This should set up the console, and the first port at 2400 baud, am I correct?

I have NOT modified tools/init, yet. Any help in this matter would be
appreciated.

Many thanks,

By running Dos fdisk to making my first partition and second
partitions, and then going back with Minix fdisk, I was able to create
partitions three and four for rfs and /usr on a 90 Meg hard disk.
