I recently acquired a copy of minix 1.2 from a friend and tried to install it on my AT compatible (Standard 286/10) with one 1.2M floppy and a 40MB Miniscribe 3650 drive. Minix booted up fine and everything worked. I then proceeded to try to put minix on the hard drive. I partitioned 10MB for minix and tried to use mkfs on the hard drive. Since I didn't know exactly how many blocks are on the partition, I tried 10000 (10M / 1K). Copying several directories to the hard disk resulted in read errors on the floppy. I then tried mkfs with a conservation 5000 blocks. It worked fine. My questions. Since I don't know whether the system I was given was for the XT or AT, the hard disk driver type is unknown. Since the disk drive works, do I need to remake the system using at_wini.c? Also, I'm missing the makefile in the kernel/MINIX directory and cannot remake the kernel. Can someone send me a copy? I ftp'ed a copy of d1.2-1.3.tar.Z and tried to "untar" it, but all attempts failed. Using tar tf d1.2-1.3.tar.Z resulted in a checksum error. Displaying the file to the terminal resulted in non-printable characters disrupting the screen. My experiments with a tar of ascii files resulted in a tar file that contains the ascii file unencripted and unaltered. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? The system I'm using runs under BSD 4.3. Dzung Hoang hoang@rex.cs.tulane.edu hoang@comus.cs.tulane.edu
