[comp.os.minix] Help with 1.2 to 1.3 upgrade

CS_MCCAB%SWTEXAS.BITNET@icsa.rice.edu (05/31/89)

Hi,

After the semester finished up last week I decided to submerge myself in
MINIX before taking up summer contract work. I am on a BITNET node so
I decided to "get" the 1.2 to 1.3 upgrade files from listserv@ndsuvm1.
Worked like a charm.......except, I had to write several filters to
get the files to pristine ASCII.

I put the files in /usr/minix3 on my hard disk and began the process of
"sh"ing the files only to discover that I need sed. I don't seem to have
sed. I have MINIX 1.2 straight from PH which evidently doesn't come with
sed, but does come with patch. As near as I can tell, I am stuck without
a version of sed to filter the upgrade files. Is that right? If so,
where do I get sed, I don't see anything like it in my copy of the
listserv directory.

Assuming that I need sed and it's unavailable to me (I am trying to do
everything within MINIX itself) will it do me any good to get the stuff
from bugs? i.e., does it use sed (or some other program that I can't
get if I'm using a straight vanilla MINIX?) I do have a very indirect
access to ftp on another machine but must not overdo it.

Finally, if I buy the PH upgrade disks, will I have the same problem?
Do these disks contain all programs needed to patch the 1.2 to upgrade
to 1.3?

Thanks in advance for all responses.

Incidently, I've been following the 286 hullabaloo with interest. I just
finished teaching a senior OS class using the MINIX book, and like all
Tanenbaum texts, it's excellent. With adequate compatible equipment it
allows an instructor to dig deep in design and code and, at the same time,
pay adequate attention to general principles. I can understand the
frustration of those of you who want to push MINIX to the limit, but
as a teacher, I need complete coordination of text, code, documentation
and equipment in order to teach OS this way. Otherwise, I might as well go
back to a general survey of OS type course. MINIX is a teaching OS that
works.

Stay the course ast.
