[comp.os.minix] PH Still Shipping 1.2

sampson@killer.DALLAS.TX.US (Steve Sampson) (05/19/89)

After waiting awhile for PH to smooth out their disk distributing operation,
I finally ordered Minix 1.3. After about 1.5 weeks the disks arrived. Guess
what, version 1.2. When is 1.3 going to ship? I seem to remember someone
saying it was shipping already? What a drag. Anyway, 1.2 works with my RLL
hard disk where 1.1 didn't. Doesn't give the right number of sectors, but that
can be fixed. I guess I'll have to give PH a call. On another subject: what
version is the separate I & D compiler/asld going to be released? (If ever).
I was looking at ways to incorporate sharable text segments, but without a
seperate I & D compiler, there would be no way to test it. Seems that a lot
of RAM is wasted on a fork, and multiple shells.

As of April 17, they were shipping Minix 1.3 for the PC/AT at least.
In fact, I ordered it shipped Fed Express, and got it 2 days after
I ordered it.

Their phone order department didn't know the difference between the
several versions (both 1.2/1.3 and XT/AT differences) so I had her
read me the descriptions and picked the one I wanted. Since they're
a book publisher, I think they still stock BOTH the 1.2 and the 1.3
versions, and ship depending on what "title number" you order.

The 1.3 version for the PC/AT is title number 583302 (off the invoice).
ISBN 0-13-583303-5 (off the disk package).
description: "Minix 1.3 Binaries and Sources for IBM PC/AT" (off both).

As if shipping version 1.2 is not bad enough, a friend recently ordered
the XT version and last week he received 1.1 from P-H!
