NASA-Langley must choose between UN*X and VMS. Which should they get? The Avionics Integration Research Laboratory (AIRLAB) is getting five 11/750-based workstations to test prototype avionics systems. They surround an 11/780 in a star network. A key task for the 750 is to simulate some aspect(s) of flight being controlled or monitored by the prototype system. Are modern avionics important? You bet your life. BUT UNIX IS NOT A REAL TIME SYSTEM!! So they should get VMS, right? (This is their main objection to UNIX right now.) I have a few questions: 0. Has anyone saved the text from the great CMU UNIX vs. VMS debate? 1. Has a VAX-UNIX ever been used for a "real time" application? 2. How difficult (relative to VMS) is it to implement such applications? 3. Has "real time" UNIX (V7 or later) been discussed in the literature? General flames on VMS vs. UNIX are also welcome. It might be pointed out that AT&T started out the AIS/Net 1 on UNIX then pulled a grand switcheroo to VMS about half way thru development. Perhaps what is good for the goose is not necessarily good for the gander in real time. M Kenig (houxf!kenig) What is the story here. Why *did* AT&T put Net-1 on VMS? Tom Truscott (duke!trt)
