OK, I got the problem gunned out, with the help of some mail messages. To summarize, the axmakefile which replaces makefile when building Minix286 has several options. What I was doing wrong was choosing the option "Evans version of Minix", thinking that since I was under Minix286 that was the correct version. That is NOT the correct choice! Apparently Bruce runs his own version of Minix (understandably) which the rest of us don't have. So: (1) I apologise for wasting net time/space talking about the problem when it was my error, (2) I thank the several people who pointed out the problem in e-mail messages, and (3) now that I've finally gotten everything running, and have both the protected mode files and the Evans TTY files stored away, if anyone needs a copy and doesn't have ftp access, I'll be glad to work with individuals on disks via U.S. mail if desired.
