There really is no advantage to having a 386 specific assembler/linker unless we're using 32 bit ints. So it would appear the GNU assembler (gas) and linker don't buy much. But on a system in 386 native mode (32 bit), some sorta virtual memory enabled (I think this is gonna be important), Minix should be able to run most of the GNU tools. I've had far better experience with the gnu tools than the Minix tools (sorry, that's the truth). I agree small is beautiful, but small and broken is ugly.
