[comp.os.minix] Zenith HD problems in 1.3

HERRHOYMAN%MASTER%UWECVAXA.BITNET@cunyvm.cuny.edu (Dirk Herr-Hoyman) (08/24/89)

Here I thought BUYING 1.3 from Prentice-Hall would solve my problems,
but no-o-o-o. I have a Zenith 159 (which is an XT clone) with a
factory 20 Meg hard drive. I do not know the actual model of the
hard drive.

When I try to use anything on the hard drive, I get numerous
"Unrecoverable read" errors. I have tried using either of partitions
1 and 2 to get a 10,000 file system with no success.

There are a couple of odd things, however.

  1) I have had limited success with version 1.1, at least creating
a file system and some directories, although it too reports errors
under 1.1. The same fs is unreadable in 1.3.

  2) Using the boot screen fsck finds no problems (with the 1.1 fs)
     but the disk fsck barfs.

I should also note that I have FORMATted and PREPed the disk under
MS-DOS multiple times.

I have used this same distribution on a Zenith 386 and 40 meg hard drive
with success, so I know I have a good copy from P-H.

Any ideas of what I might try? Is there a known patch for this?
I have access to BITNET, but not internet.

Any help in getting me over this hump would be GREATLY appreciated,
as this is NOT the way I wanted to spend my summer vacation.
