[comp.os.minix] MINIX for the Atari ST - Installation Help

dave@sactoh0.UUCP (David M. Schwartz) (09/11/89)

I just purchased MINIX for the ATARI ST and think I may have a
problem with the disks. I purchased it from Prentice-Hall. Of
the 9 disks, only the one marked 08.TOS can be read from the
desktop. Is this normal? If so, can I still make back-up
copies? Some of the disks when I open them, show no files,
others show greek-like characters for file names, and the number
of bytes is larger than is possible to get on a floppy disk. Are
my disks bad? Should I contact Prentice-Hall about it? Any help
would sure be appreciated.

The disks come with a 62 page instruction manual with a nice coffee-resistant
plasticized cover. Read it. At the top of page 4 it clearly states that
only one of the disks is readable under TOS. The rest are MINIX file systems
and can only be copied using MINIX.

I think you`ll better read the Little Booklet you got with your disks.
It will tell you all you have to know about copying your disks and
installing minix on the st.

What you get are TOS copyable disks. the rest is MINIX disk
format which is not TOS interpretable.

Thus, you can use the A: to B: copy because the 'boot' block is faked
to look like TOS. But there are no TOS filesystems, only a minix file
system.

Boot the root disk, and follow instructions. all will be well.

So now we have a new expression exclusively for the MINIX community,
analogous to UNIX's >>RTFM<<.

It's >>RTNCRPCM<< -- "Read the nice, coffee-resistant plasticized covered
manual" -- has quite a distinctive ring to it! In addition, it can safely
be used around women and children.

Hi!

Only the disk 08.TOS isupposed to be read by the desktop. All the other ones
contain MINIX or special file systems. But yes, you can back them up using the
icon drag operation.

But if you have bought the stuff, you should have received a manual. Open it
to page 4 (section 2.1) and read it.

Remember you must *one-sided* disks for making back-up copies.
