[comp.os.minix] Recent change to info-minix

ncoverby@ndsuvax.UUCP (Glen Overby) (09/24/89)

This past week all subscribers to info-minix@udel.edu were moved to
listserv@vm1.nodak.edu. This move marked the retirement of James Galvin as
the info-minix list maintainer, and my starting. Jim created the list soon
after the announcement of Minix, even before comp.os.minix was created, and
ran it up until this past week. Thanks for all the hard work, Jim!

Durring the change, Marty Hoag, postmaster at vm1.nodak.edu, thought that it
would be a good idea to set up LISTSERV so that any postings sent to it
would also be distributed on USENET. Our first try at this did not work
correctly, and the list is now set up to only take submissions to
info-minix@udel.edu.

All administravia relating to the list should be sent to one of the
following addresses (all are equivalent):

	info-minix-request@udel.edu
	minix@plains.nodak.edu
	minix@ndsuvax (bitnet)

The following is my "new subscriber" introduction, which describes how
everything is now set up.

Welcome to the info-minix mailing list!

Please send contributions to the list proper to "info-minix@udel.edu".
Administrivia, e.g., problems or questions about the list, should be sent to
"info-minix-request@udel.edu", "minix@plains.nodak.edu" or "minix@ndsuvax"
on Bitnet.

You may leave the list at any time by sending a "SIGNOFF MINIX-L" command
to listserv@vm1.nodak.edu. Please note that this command must NOT be sent to
the list address (MINIX-L@vm1.nodak.edu) but to the LISTSERV address
(listserv@vm1.nodak.edu).

This mailing list is intended for the discussion of the Minix Operating
System. It is a Version 7 system call compatible OS written for IBM
Compatible PCs by Andy Tanenbaum (minix@cs.vu.nl). He is also the author of
a book which describes the system "Operating Systems: Design and
Implementation", published by Prentice-Hall, 1987, ISBN 0-13-637406-9.
Their number is 1-800-223-1360; from outside the US/Canada the number is
+1-201-592-2000.

The mailing list is run from the BITNET listserver "MINIX-L@NDSUVM1"
(which is also on the internet, where it is known as vm1.nodak.edu) and its
peers, and is gatewayed to the USENET newsgroup "comp.os.minix".
Subscribers should consider which of the possible subscription methods is
the most effective use of resources, i.e., where USENET News is available,
readers should not subscribe to the list since it is already carried at your
site.

It is considered very unfriendly to allow your mail software to generate
automatic replies, eg vacation notices, which are sent to the list or me.
Please note, due to the popularity of the list and the volume of mail, I am
typically ruthless about deleting subscribers whose addresses generate failed
mail. You should get mail every day from this list, so it is prudent to
contact me if you do not see any mail for two or three days; you should allow
time for typical delays before complaining.

There are several sites which archive all messages sent to the list, plus
anything else that they see fit. You can obtain information on these sites
by sending mail to listserv@vm1.nodak.edu saying:

	get minix info minix

and you will be sent the "Minix Information Sheet", which also contains
other general information on MINIX, such as what versions exist and how to
ordering them from Prentice-Hall and a list of machines it is known to work
with.

The amount of acknowledgement you wish to receive from this list
upon completion of a mailing operation can be changed by means of
a "SET MINIX-L option" command, where "option" may be either "ACK"
(mail acknowledgement), "MSGACK" (interactive messages only) or "NOACK".

Please note that it is presently possible for anybody to determine that
you are signed up to the list through the use of the "REVIEW" command, which
returns the network address and name of all the subscribers. If you do not
wish your name to be available to others in this fashion, just issue a "SET
MINIX-L CONCEAL" command.

More information on LISTSERV commands can be found in the "General
Introduction guide", which you can retrieve by sending an "INFO GENINTRO"
command to listserv@vm1.nodak.edu.
