[comp.os.minix] Clam Confusion.

callum@gara.une.oz (Callum Gibson CCEN) (10/06/89)

Anyone who is involved in compiling Clam should read this.

There seems to be a large amount of confusion about Clam postings
and versions and patches etc. This is partly caused by Warren posting
the wrong header and also I suspect some patches got lost at our Aus gateway.
Some people have posted asking about bugs but these have been fixed in some
of the patches so it is clear that they have missed out on seeing these.

So this is the current situation:

Clam was posted initially at the start of this year. (complete)
I think it was posted again sometime later with some fixes.
The current version of Clam is called 1.3 (because it is the third
complete posting). This complete posting was posted in July or August.
A few weeks later the first patches were posted. This posting was called
patch #1.
Some weeks after that, the fixes for SysV and other misc bugs were
completed and this made up the bulk of the next posting which was titled
patch #3 but was actually only the second set of patches to be sent. That
was about a month ago. I posted immediately after pointing out the mistake
in the name of those postings but if you look in global.c you will see what
the current patch level is. This is the most recent version. There will be a
line in global.c that says Clam 1.3.2 (version 1, 3rd release, 2nd patch).

Now, because of all this confusion people have been asking me to send this
and that part which they have missed. Instead of mailing me direct maybe try
asking locally (if you're from overseas, anyway) in this newsgroup. It's a
bit more preferable if I don't have to send stuff overseas. Anyway, since
the patches are quite often as big as an entire posting, I may need to send
the whole lot in the next release rather than some patches and then everyone
will be up to date. I realise that news expires quickly from some sites.

Finally, thankyou to all the people who have responded to our Clam
postings. You have helped weed out many bugs that don't show up on the
machines here. I have replied to all who mail me with comments so if you
have no reply, then the mail got lost. Wait a week before trying again.
Anyway, keep compiling and debugging, but don't complain too much or you'll
hurt my feelings :-)

    cheers,
    Callum
