'Folks, Well the hard disk still don't work. (HAS ANYBODY OUT THERE EVER USED A '286 machine w /2 HARD DRIVES?!?) I've now re-formatted both drives twice, (though I haven't done any low-level formatting...don't have anything to do it, or if I do I don't know how to get at it, [it's not at CC00:5 or C800:5]) and used tried to use fdisk w/extended partition as one person suggested...but that doesn't work since segate 251's have 6 heads, 820 sectors, 42 mb (formatted) which doesn't seem to fit any AT drive type (10 & 5 don't work properly...format only ends up with 20 mb for type 10) so I ended up using DM on the 251, and then used dos fdisk (from dos 3.3) on the 225 and formatted it with dos format. Here's exactly what I'm doing : boot minix, login as root, mknod /dev/hd5 b 3 5 mknod /dev/hd6 b 3 6 chown bin hd5 chown bin hd6 chmod 600 hd5 chmod 600 hd6 (at this point all the hdX devices look the same) mkfs /dev/hd6 20875 and I get : Error: put_block couldn't write Line 1 being processed when error detected. I really don't want to put minix on my 251 as of yet, since I'm still finishing up my Masters project and I don't see why there should be a problem with setting it up on the 225!?! Re-building a lot of stuff (and just being able to hack through the kernal, at_wini.c is next to impossible w/1 floppy, so again I ask for help.) I'd order 1.3, but given the problems that I'm having, I don't want to throw more money and time at this problem now, if my only solution is going to be 'use the first hard drive'. That's why I'm asking for help. If the solution is to use the first drive, I'll have to wait, sigh... -- Earl D. Baugh Jr. ENSCO INC. Internet : baugh@hal.CSS.GOV "Open the pod bay doors...."
