[comp.os.minix] Neophyte questions - XT vs. AT and manual vs. textbook

owens@cs.buffalo.edu (William Owens) (10/13/89)

I've been looking at Minix for a long time now (since version 1.2 came out)
and have finally decided to jump in. But before I do, I need to know two
things so as to decide what to order.

First, what is the difference between the XT and AT versions? I expect that
the XT version is on 360k disks, and the AT version on 1.2meg. I can attach
either drive to my machine (Zenith Z-286 AT clone with one 720k 3.5") for the
time necessary to bring up the OS, but it would be more convenient to copy off
of 360k disks, from what I have so far read (George Nace's article on the
subject). The question then, boils down to whether there are any other
differences between the two; the only one one mentioned was 640k/512k, and my
machine has only 512k.

Second, I would like to buy the whole textbook, as opposed to the manual,
but I don't want to miss any PC-specific information. Does the textbook
contain everything in the manual, or should I buy both to get all the
information?

Thanks for your help - without this newsgroup, I would never even have heard
of minix...

                                 Bill.
