[comp.os.minix] boot problem with WD WX1 and ST251

kai@uicsrd.csrd.uiuc.edu (11/22/89)

I've been unable to get Minix 1.2 (or 1.3) to boot on my Kaypro XT clone with
Western Digital 1002A-WX1 hard disk controller with a Seagate ST251-1 hard
drive installed. If I remove the hard disk controller, Minix boots fine from
floppy. With the hard disk controller, Minix boots and presents the fsck menu,
but appears to hang after I load the root floppy and press the equals sign.
The hard disk select light blinks, the floppy drive starts spinning, and that's
all. I do not get the display showing RAM disk loading progress. The F1 key
shows "hardwar" getting lots of "sys" time.

I've tried to find patches in the archives on bugs.nosc.mil, but all the ones
I've found seem to be for at_wini.c, for RLL disks (which the ST251-1 is not),
or else they have already been included in the 1.2 or 1.3 sources.

Has anyone else had and fixed this problem? Can someone tell me where I might
start? Is this likely a hard drive problem, floppy, or maybe somewhere else?

Please send email directly to me, I can't read news (notes) very often.
