[comp.os.minix] 1.5 from Prentice-Hall

ast@cs.vu.nl (Andy Tanenbaum) (02/01/90)

It now appears that Prentice-Hall will probably sell 1.5.x after all.
What this will consist of precisely will become clear in the next few
weeks. In any event, it will be identical to some net posting from me
(1.5.3?, 1.5.4?), so people who keep up to date on the net won't need it.
It is intended for all those folks not on the net.

I will announce more when there is more to announce. I doubt that P-H
will have it in stock before mid-summer. PLEASE DON'T CALL THEM NOW. The
people who answer the phones know nothing about this (unless they happen
to read this newsgroup). There will not be an upgrade kit (too much work
for me), but there will probably be a discount price for people who bought
1.x from P-H and sent back the registration card or something like that.
The timing, pricing, etc. is still very much up in the air. Again, I'll
announce this all when we figure it out.

If there are bugs or other things you want to see corrected now, please
let me know. If you have any new programs you want to contribute, please
send them to minix-ref@plains.nodak.edu to let the referees have a first go
(I'm a referee too, so I see everything sent there).

A question has come up about what the obligations of the referees are.
Do you have to respond to everything sent there? Of course not. Just the
things you think are interesting. If you think nothing is interesting and
have no time, there is not much point in signing up as a referee, however.
We hope to get a large enough collection of referees that most configurations
are covered, to eliminate problems of the sort "It works on X but not on Y."

                                ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Ah...'scusez, Andy, but P-H didn't include any registration card in either
the original 1.1 or the upgrade 1.3 packages I bought from them. If you
are talking to the P-H people who can decide such things, and they decide
that they will provide an upgrade package, it would be nice if they would
accept something like the label from the #1 disk as proof of purchase.

I'll discuss that with them. I think there is a good chance they will
go along with something like that.
