Sender: Fred van Kempen <kyber!waltje@minixug.hobbynet.nl> Organization: MINIX User Group Holland, Netherlands Dear Netlanders, During the past couple of years, many programs and utility packages have been posted to comp.os.minix, and even more software has been written without being posted. Personally, I like to hack the MINIX kernel and to write flakey mailers (cheer up, we all have to learn...). Since we entered the "serious" stage of existence with the appearance of MINIX 1.5, I decided to clean up a couple of these programs/packages for posting to the net. That gives everyone a chance to enjoy... The packages I would like to post are: FLOAT - Floating point package. This was written by Peter S. Housel, and some people posted additional routines which are included in this release. WINDOW - Screen management (window, popup, etc) package. This was written by me, and it runs on UNIX and MS-DOS (yes...) as well. It allows for very professional-looking program screens. UWALT - Various portable routines. This is a library of routines I wrote to overcome portability problems between UNIX, MINIX and MSDOS. For example, a getch() and getche() routine which decodes ANSI escape sequences (cursor and function keys). BPLUS - BTREE File Indexing Module. This module was written by Hunter and Associates. I once obtained the 1.0 (ShareWare) version of this module, which contained some bugs. The new (2.0) release is bug-free, and I ported it to MINIX. It can be used to create index file of large databases. I use this module in a database containing the members of the MINIX User Group Holland, for example. This module may be distributed as ShareWare. STR86 - Fast Intel 8086/286 String Handling Library. Some time ago, Norbert Schlenker posted a library of routines that perform the standard string routines in pure assembly. Usually, this gives a performance increase of about 60% ! I believe there is a STR68K as well... People who are interested in getting these packages can e-mail me. I will post them if enough interest exists, otherwise I will send them by e-mail. For people in Holland only: As an example of how to use my WINDOW, UWALT and BPLUS modules, I wrote a payroll program ("salarisadministratie") which can be used for almost any (normal) situation. It can perform a complete "bruto-naar-netto" calculation, which has been approved by the Ministerie van Financien, for which I sometimes work (I am an administrator). This package is only of use for people in Holland. However, it may also be useful for other people as an example of how to use all these libraries.
