[comp.os.minix] Minix Books

kjh@pollux.usc.edu (Kenneth J. Hendrickson) (03/05/90)

I have the book "Operating Systems, Design and Implementation" by
Tanenbaum. In the bookstore today, I saw a book titled "Minix for the
IBM PC, XT, and AT", also written by Tananbaum. Does this book have
anything that the first book does not? Should I get this book?
Please reply by e-mail, as I have too many messages to read here, and I
can't keep up with the traffic on this newsgroup. Thank you.

Recently I posted an article asking a question about a new Minix book I
saw in the bookstore. The book is a paperback book, entitled "Minix for
the IBM PC, XT, and AT". I already have the "Operating Systems, Design
and Implementation" book. I was wondering if I should get the new book
also.

Sorry to bother the net with stupid questions. There is too much
traffic here already. Here is the answer to my question that others
sent me e-mail asking me to post.

%2. HOW CAN I FIND OUT MORE ABOUT MINIX?
%MINIX is described in detail in the following book:
%
% Title: Operating Systems: Design and Implementation
% Author: Andrew S. Tanenbaum
% Publisher: Prentice-Hall
% ISBN: 0-13-637406-9 (Hardcover)
% 0-13-637331-3 (Paperback, outside of U.S. and Canada)
%
%There are also French and Spanish translations of the book available, and a
%German version is due out soon. The paperback MINIX Reference Manual is a
%subset of the book; It contains only the MINIX specific information, not
%the general background stuff on operating systems that the book contains.
%The software package does not contain a manual; this is contained in the
%appendices to the book, which also contain a complete source code listing
%(in C) of the version 1.1 MINIX kernel.
