I ordered minix 1.3 (ISBN 0-13-583303-5) from my local college bookstore, about 3 weeks ago. They just called me and said P-H informed them that it would be out of stock indefinitely! I called P-H at 1-800-225-7162, and they told me that they could not give me a date when 1.3 would be back in stock. When asked why they couldn't provide a date, they couldn't provide an answer. In short, I'm pissed off. Now it seems that I have to wait for another 6-12 months until 1.5.? is available, unless I can find somebody locally to copy it from. If there is some kind of voting as to whether another distribution source can be found, I am all in favour of dumping P-H. Their customer (dis-)service is terrible! :-( Ken Hendrickson N8DGN/6 kjh@usc.edu ...!uunet!usc!pollux!kjh

I would also like to suggest that P-H is thwarting one of the basic reasons why Andy wrote minix. I thought it was so students of O/S's could have a readily available and cheap O/S with source code to play with and learn. If P-H has customer service so bad that you can't even get the software, then you can't play with it and learn about it either. P-H should be dumped in favour of some other distribution system. Using P-H for their supposedly good distribution is counter-productive. Ken Hendrickson N8DGN/6 kjh@usc.edu ...!uunet!usc!pollux!kjh

I recently special ordered Minix 1.3 from a bookstore. What showed up was 1.2, which I already had. I called P-H to find out what happened, and a few days later they sent me the 1.3 disks at no charge. Needless to say I'm happy with them at the moment. Ken Firestone
