[comp.os.minix] Authoratative upgrade information wanted.

ed@iitmax.IIT.EDU (Ed Federmeyer) (06/01/90)

I would like to make a few suggestions about the various Minix upgrade
kits in existance...

I recently used (am using still, really) the d1.2-1.3 upgrade kit from
bugs.nosc.mil, and I thought it would have been helpfull/nice if a file
would have been included that contained descriptions of all the new
features and bug fixes that these sets of patches/files will give you.
Also, a (hopefully) short list of known bugs that you will now get!
I can easily see the new programs that are included in commands, but what
I'd like to know about are internal changes for more reliable/faster
system, and support for new features.

The "Minix Information Sheet" is a really good idea, but I think that this
sort of information deserves more than one or two paragraphs!

If anyone out there has a nice file with this information, please post it,
or tell me where I can get it myself. I think a periodic posting to this
group would also be good, to hopefully cut down the "Can Minix do XXX?"
questions. (I know I've asked some before, and I'm sure you are tired of
reading them... Not that they are completly unresonable... but with a
periodic posting of the info, it may help new users to better understand
the rich history that Minix has enjoyed...)

Also, is there an upgrade kit somewhere to go from 1.3 to 1.5.10?
Bugs.nosc.mil has 1.3-1.5.0 / 1.5.0-1.5.2 / 1.5.2-1.5.4, etc, can I
do this in one step?

What about an upgrade from 1.1 to 1.5x? After haveing purchased the
book/disk package several years ago and not doing anyting with them,
I now starting to dig into the material. I don't suppose there is any-
way to send my original disk somewhere and have them "filled up"
with the newest version.

Ditto. I also am trying to get it running on a Tandy 1000. One of the
more incompatibles ever marketed. I don't forsee any problems in getting
it runnning, but 1.1 -> 1.2 -> 1.3 -> 1.5.1 -> ... doesn't thrill me.
Any suggestions?
