I have had Minix for about 3 weeks and have been reading this newsgroup for the same amount of time. Here are my questions: 1) Are *.Z files on the archive sites compressed via Unix compress or compress under minix? (Or dosent it matter?) 2) Is there any kit put together that upgrades straight from my version to the latest, or do I have to go thru all of the steps in upgrading? If there is a differance between Unix compress and minix compress and also if the files on the sites are compressed via Unix compress are there any kind souls who could help me get copies of the files uncompressed? (For I have no Unix access at the present time.) Thanx in advance, Babs Silvis

Don't know about the archive sites, but everything I send out should be uncompressable under both MINIX and Unix. The compress program behaves the same. However, MINIX/ST can only deal with 13 bits compress, so ude compress -b13 when compressing on a Unix box. > 2) Is there any kit put together that upgrades straight from my version to > the latest, or do I have to go thru all of the steps in upgrading? Not by me. I didn't feel like it after doing all the individual steps. I've heard rumours from someone wo was in the process of making such a kit. If it exists, please let me know the ftp address, so I can point people to it, who ask this question. I also got some patches for ST1.1, and a few more questions! 1) Does the "kit" for st1.1 to st 1.5.0 apply to the from the box minix st1.1? or the patched st1.1? ie: does this kit already include the patches for st1.1 2) The kit says that I have to have PC sources. WHY DID I BUY MINIX ST IF I HAVE TO HAVE PC SOURCES (IN ORDER TO UPGRADE?) >Happy minixing, :( Not happy at all... Scott

AAARRRGGGHHH!!! While transversing this ugly thing they call a mainframe (an IBM 3090-600s) all of the files keep getting messed up somehow. Let me ask this stupid question then: Are these files supposed to be transfered ASCII or Binary? I have not been able to have Minix either uudecode or uncompress any of the files, thus I assume something is going wrong. Also on another note: The info file says that I need to have stuff from the PC 1.3 -> 1.5.0 upgrade. Which files do I need from the archive? And, when going thru old articles on Bugs.xxxx.mil I found one with parts #1-70 listed but, the info file for upgrading the ST version has stuff about parts #71-73 in it for the PC ... what are these files? Please help me! I would like to get 1.5.0 running soon. It has several things in it that I would definitely like. Babs Silvis P.S. In 1.5.0 is the bourne shell updated to handle command histories?

But no, the various upgrades published on the net do not apply to patched versions but to the original one. >2) The kit says that I have to have PC sources. > > WHY DID I BUY MINIX ST IF I HAVE TO HAVE PC SOURCES (IN ORDER TO UPGRADE?) You do NOT need any original PC stuff to upgrade. I certainly did not have, and went all the way to 1.5.10 (with only 1 wrong CRC in compress.c). The PC stuff it refers to is probably the PC patches that apply to everything except kernel, tools and some commands. >:( Not happy at all...
