The reason for using <newline> for the end of line marker in unix is that
<carriage return> performs a useful formatting feature, namely preparing
for overstriking on hardcopy terminals, whereas <newline> is pretty device
dependent as to what it does. (down, or down and return). Thus if the choice
is limited to these tow, I think the original decision was the correct one.
