[comp.os.minix] Problems building boot diskette

abc@adm.BRL.MIL (Brinton Cooper) (08/10/90)

I am beginning with Minix 1.2 (because I need the experience and the
practice). I've got the PH distribution for an XT and am working with
an AT (true blue).

My first goal is to recompile kernel using at_wini.c and make a boot
diskette that will recognize /dev/hd*. To that end, I re-compiled
kernel, following the instructions in Prof Tanenbaum's book. The new
kernel size is, incidentally, 9984 bytes where the original was 25788.
This is not a complete surprise as the source for at_wini.c is somewhat
smaller than that for xt_wini.c.

When I run "build," which, incidentally, I had first to compile, it
ended with:

Total size including fsck is 118608.
Build: kernel data space: no magic number.

Needless to say, the boot diskette didn't boot.

I've been over my procedures time and time again. One of my former
students did the same thing about a year ago and his boot diskette was
fine.

What am I neglecting? What am I doing wrong?

Post answers or reply by e-mail to <abc@brl.mil>, and THANKS!
