[comp.os.minix] MINIX on AT&T 6300 Bootup

gotberg@cbnewsk.att.com (richard.a.gotberg) (08/20/90)

Could you help me(hopefully a new user) with a problem with a MINIX
INSTALLATION Problem?

PC CONFIGURATION:
I currently have an AT&T 6300 with; DOS 4.01, a Seagate ST-251 41MB
Drive, a Logitech Mouse with half card, a generic 1200 baud modem
half card, a loaded (full size) memory card for 384K, 256K memory on the
motherboard, MINX 1.2 for 640K Memory, Firmware 1.43 , printer,
and 8087-2 coprocessor. DOS4.01 and Minix were purchased during the
Spring'90 semester. I also substituted a NEC V30 for the 8086 processor.

BOOT-UP RESPONSE:
The MINIX will not boot up, I tried it successfully on another machine so the
software isn't corrupted. Is 640K required to be on the motherboard?
Is there a problem with a 41 MB disk and the MINIX RAM Disk? During
some attempts to boot, the floppy and hard disk lights just go on and
stay on until I do a reset. Other attempts have yielded messages like:

    unexpected trap: vector < 16
    pc = 0x2651  text+data+bss=0x9A00

    or

    unexpected trap: vector < 16
    pc = 0x0  text+data+bss=0x3580

The other machine I tried it on was a 6300Plus(I know) with 20MB and
1MB Ram(I think). I really seem to have little control, as the Boot disk
is loaded prints some messages such as version and requests input (the "="
as per the compiler book). After the "=" is entered the floppy disk indicator
lights and the hard disk indicator or one of the other messages above
results.

ATTEMPTS TRIED:
The results were repeatable depending on the hard disk formatting.
The machine is a relatively early version and has a full card disk
controller with 1 jumper and 1 8-bit dip switch, one technician
I talked to referred tm it as being analog, although it has an 8085 on
it.

ANOTHER QUESTION:
Are there any Hard disk partitioning
considerations I should be aware of, so I can run Minix from a hard
disk later, but can at least use DOS without having to reformat or
repartition later, when I do get MINIX to work.

Also any suggestions on Hard Disk formatting. I wiped my disk clean a while back
and want to reload it, but I wanted to make a partition for Minix. May be
31 MB Dos, 10 MB Extended{5MB for 2 disks} then I could load Minix on
1 extended Disk with an option for a 2nd Disk. Or at least make the 1st
partition for DOS so I can reload some programs I would like to run.
Hope the high use of DOS doesn't throw you off, but I'm going to start needing
it for work and then school in the Fall{Class: File Management}. As a note
I was interested in Minix, but didn't get it until the teacher of my
Operating Systems Class started using the book as a reference.

Please respond with any information known to get MINIX running on a PC6300.

Greatly Appreciate it,
                        Rich Gotberg
